The Moon is the mind and the emotions: how a person feels, nurtures, and responds to the world. It also stands for the mother, the home, and the public. In Vedic astrology the Moon's sign and nakshatra at birth carry as much weight as the Sun sign does in Western practice.
Parashara calls Chandra the mind (manas) of the natural person, a queen among the grahas, watery (kapha-vata) in constitution, round-bodied and of gentle speech. She is the karaka for the mother, the mind, and general wellbeing. Her deity is Varuna; her direction is north-west; her day is Monday. A waxing, bright Moon counts as a natural benefic; a dark Moon close to the Sun loses that benefic standing.
— Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra ch. 3 (Graha Svarūpa)
The Moon is exalted in Vrishabha (deepest at 3°), debilitated in Vrishchika, with moolatrikona in Vrishabha 3°–30° and own sign Karka. She counts the Sun and Mercury as friends and no graha as an enemy. Her strength depends heavily on paksha bala (brightness): a full Moon far from the Sun is strong regardless of sign, while a new Moon is weak even when well placed. The Moon's dispositor and nakshatra lord colour the whole mental life; Chandra-based counting (chandra lagna) is used as a second ascendant throughout classical work.
