Mercury is intellect, speech, and exchange: learning, writing, calculation, trade, and wit. It adapts to the company it keeps, so the planets with Mercury shape how the mind expresses itself.
Parashara calls Budha the speech of the natural person, the prince among the grahas, of mixed (tridosha) constitution, fond of humour, and skilled in words. He is a benefic when alone or with benefics, and takes on the nature of malefics that join him. He is the karaka for speech, intellect, and trade. His deity is Vishnu; his direction is north; his day is Wednesday.
— Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra ch. 3 (Graha Svarūpa)
Mercury is exalted in Kanya (deepest at 15°), debilitated in Meena, with moolatrikona in Kanya 15°–20° and own signs Mithuna and Kanya — uniquely exalted, moolatrikona and own in the same sign. Friends are the Sun and Venus; the Moon is an enemy; the rest are neutral. Mercury tolerates combustion better than other grahas in many classical treatments, but combustion still weakens judgement and speech. As a mutable benefic he turns functional malefic readily in company with malefics, which any assessment must check first.
