The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) is the foundational text of Vedic natal astrology — the source of the house system, the vargas, the dashas, and most of the rules this library cites.
Framed as Maharishi Parashara's teaching to Maitreya, the text spans graha and rashi characterisation, the shodashavarga, bhava judgements, yogas, avasthas, the dasha systems with Vimshottari foremost, and ayurdaya.
— Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra self (structure)
The received text is a medieval compilation of older material; editions differ in verse numbering, which is why this platform cites BPHS at chapter level. It is the default authority for the rule library's classical:bphs provenance tags — 89 rules cite it directly.
