Parashara describes Shani as the grief of the natural person, a servant among the grahas, of tamasic nature, lame-gaited, lean, dark, and windy (vata) in constitution. He is the karaka for longevity, sorrow, labour, and servants. His deity is Brahma; his direction is west; his day is Saturday. Though a natural malefic, a strong and well-disposed Saturn confers durable position and authority over the many.

Saturn is exalted in Tula (deepest at 20°), debilitated in Mesha, with moolatrikona in Kumbha 0°–20° and own signs Makara and Kumbha. Friends are Mercury and Venus; the Sun, Moon and Mars are enemies; Jupiter is neutral. Saturn casts special aspects on the 3rd and 10th houses from itself in addition to the 7th and gains directional strength in the 7th house. His slow transit gives rise to the sade sati (the roughly seven-and-a-half-year passage around natal Moon) and the kantaka and ashtama shani windows, each read as periods of pressure whose quality depends on Saturn's functional role for the lagna.
