लग्न Lagna

The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It fixes the twelve houses, and everything in a Vedic chart is counted from it. In a sense the lagna is you — the point where sky met earth at your first breath, and the anchor the whole chart hangs from. It stands for the body, the temperament, the way you meet the world and the lens through which every other placement is read; shift the lagna and each planet's house, and so its meaning, shifts with it. Because it moves about one sign every two hours, it is the most personal and time-sensitive point in the chart — people born only hours apart can carry very different lives here, which is why an accurate birth time matters more than any other single detail. Its ruling planet, wherever it sits, carries the health of the whole nativity: strong and well placed, the self moves through life with vitality and direction; troubled, a person may struggle to find their footing whatever else the chart promises.
