The first house — the lagna or ascendant — is the self: body, temperament, appearance, and the overall direction of a life. Everything else in the chart is read relative to it.
Parashara assigns to the tanu bhava the body, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, happiness and sorrow, and the native's essential nature. As both a kendra and a trikona it is the one house that is simultaneously pillar and blessing, and the condition of its lord is the first judgement of the whole chart.

Strength here comes from the lagna lord's dignity, placement and aspects, benefics occupying or aspecting the lagna, and the lagna's own bala. Weakness comes from the lord in a dusthana (6, 8, 12), combustion, debilitation, or paapa kartari hemming of the lagna. The Sun as karaka adds a vitality reading distinct from the lord's. The lagna degree also anchors the bhava chalit cusps, so borderline planets may serve a neighbouring house's agenda even while sitting in the first.
