Parashara describes Karka as a movable watery sign, female, rising with its hinder part, pale-red, dwelling in ponds and sandy banks. Its lord is Chandra; Guru is exalted here at the 5th degree and Mangala debilitated at the 28th.

A chara jala-tattva sign ruled by the Moon — the only sign she owns. It hosts Jupiter's exaltation (deepest 5°) and Mars's debilitation. For Karka lagna Mars becomes the yogakaraka (5th and 10th lord), the strongest of the classical lagna-specific promotions; the Moon's paksha bala then colours the whole chart's tone more than usual, since the lagna lord waxes and wanes.
