A drekkana is a third of a sign — ten degrees. Dividing each of the twelve signs into three gives thirty-six drekkanas around the zodiac, and this third-chart (the D3) is usually read for siblings, courage and personal initiative. Out of those thirty-six, tradition singles one out for careful attention: the twenty-second drekkana, counted from the drekkana the ascendant itself falls in. Because three drekkanas make a sign, this twenty-second one always lands at the threshold of the eighth house — the house the old texts tie to longevity, upheaval and the deep turning-points of a life — which is why classical astrologers have long looked here, together with the eighth house of the trimshamsha (the D30, the chart of trials), when weighing the harder, health-and-longevity side of a chart. This is best held gently. The names are severe and the classical language sterner still, but the length of a life is one of the hardest things to judge and the easiest to get wrong; no single point settles it, and a careful reader never takes one in isolation. On this platform the twenty-second drekkana and the D30 eighth are treated as one reference among many, never as an omen or a date. Where the tradition points here, the responsible reading is a nudge toward care — steady habits, timely check-ups, not driving the body past its limits — not a verdict about how long someone will live.
Counted from the drekkāṇa the lagna occupies, the twenty-second drekkāṇa — the khara ('sharp') drekkāṇa, its lord the khareśa — falls in the eighth sign from the ascendant. The longevity reckoning weighs its sign, its lord and any affliction upon it among the arishta indications, read together with the eighth of the rāśi and the eighth of the trimśāṃśa, the D30 being the varga of misfortune. A malefic occupying or aspecting the twenty-second drekkāṇa, or an afflicted khareśa, is the classical caution; benefic influence upon it is protective. The later phalita texts (Phaladeepika, Jātaka Pārijāta) develop the khareśa device in detail — always as one strand of āyurdāya woven with the eighth house, its lord, Saturn and the lagna, never a lone indicator.

Derivation: thirty-six drekkāṇas of 10° tile the zodiac, three to a sign, so counting twenty-two from the lagna's own drekkāṇa lands — for every ascendant, whatever rank the lagna holds within its sign — on the same-ranked drekkāṇa of the eighth sign, the 'start of the eighth' from which it takes its longevity association. This platform computes the full D3 and D30 through its shodashavarga engine, so the sign and lord of the twenty-second drekkāṇa and the eighth house of the trimśāṃśa are locatable from the same varga positions the rest of the library uses; there is no separate affliction score for them. It issues no longevity or end-of-life verdict from either: consistent with the eighth-house and maraka entries, such indications are read only alongside the eighth house, its lord, Saturn (the āyu kāraka) and the lagna, and are turned into timed, agency-preserving guidance rather than a prediction about the length of life.
