The Significance of Champa Shashti

In Maharashtra and Karnataka, Lord Khandoba, a revered manifestation of Lord Shiva, is the focus of the Hindu festival, Champa Shashti. Celebrated on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha (November-December), it is observed during the waxing moon. The victory of Lord Khandoba over the demons Mani and Malla is commemorated in this festival, symbolizing the defeat of evil by good.

Champa Shashti is celebrated by devotees with fasting, prayer, and processions as they seek divine protection, strength, and material well-being.

The Legend of Lord Khandoba’s Victory

In legend, the world was terrorized by two demons, Mani and Malla, who disturbed the gods. Praying to Lord Shiva, the gods witnessed his transformation into the fierce Khandoba (Martanda Bhairava), who then entered the fray.

Following a brutal six-day conflict, Khandoba vanquished the demons on Champa Shashti. Facing death, Mani and Malla submitted to the deity, their service representing the vanquishing of self and illusion.

Lord Khandoba, worshipped as a protective deity, watches over devotees in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and beyond, safeguarding them from evil. Depictions frequently show him on horseback, armed, and accompanied by Mhalsa and Banai, symbolizing divine power and justice.
