About Badhaka Calculator
The rule comes from the Kerala tradition of Prashna Marga and depends only on the nature of your ascendant sign. For a movable (chara) lagna — Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn — the 11th house is the badhaka-sthana. For a fixed (sthira) lagna — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius — it is the 9th house. For a dual (dvisvabhava) lagna — Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces — it is the 7th house. Because Vedic houses follow whole signs, the badhaka sign and its lord are fixed for each ascendant: the full 12-row mapping is shown in the reference table below, with your own lagna highlighted once you enter your birth details.
Knowing which planet is your badhakesh is only half the reading — the other half is where it sits and when it acts. The calculator locates your badhakesh by house and sign, notes its dignity, and describes the nature of the obstruction: from its seat it directly opposes the house opposite (the 7th from itself), and if the badhakesh is Mars, Jupiter or Saturn it also casts its special full aspects on additional houses. A mahadasha spans 6 to 20 years — too broad to be actionable. The badhaka theme concentrates in the badhakesh's ANTARdasha periods, which run months to a few years. The table lists the upcoming ones with exact dates and highlights any window running right now.
Does a badhaka mean bad luck or a doomed area of life?
No. The badhaka marks friction and delay, not denial — and the same planet often rules other, supportive houses too. Classical practice reads badhakesh periods as seasons for patience, review and steady practice rather than force. Many charts achieve exactly the badhaka house's significations, only later or by an indirect route.
What do the "opposing" columns mean?
From whichever house the badhakesh occupies (its seat), it casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself — the house it directly opposes. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn additionally aspect the 4th/8th, 5th/9th and 3rd/10th from themselves, so when one of them is your badhakesh those houses are listed as well.
Which tradition does the badhaka rule come from?
The systematic badhaka doctrine is laid out in Prashna Marga, the 17th-century Kerala classic, and is widely applied in South Indian practice for both natal and prashna (horary) work. For Scorpio and Aquarius badhaka signs, tradition also weighs Ketu and Rahu as co-lords, which the table notes.
Is badhaka only counted from the lagna?
No — the classical rule is framed for signs by modality, so every sign (and therefore every whole-sign house) has a defined badhaka and badhakesh. The texts apply it from the lagna first and the Moon second, and prashna practice applies it to the bhava under query.
