The Significance of Shravana Purnima

The full moon of Shravana (July-August), known as Shravana Purnima, is an auspicious occasion rich in spiritual and cultural meaning. A full moon of great importance on the Hindu calendar, this sacred day features numerous religious observances, rituals, and festivals. Various traditions, including Raksha Bandhan, Upakarma (Yajurveda Upakarma), Hayagriva Jayanti, and the worship of Shiva and Vishnu, are observed across India.

Shravana Purnima is also considered an auspicious time for fasting, charity, and spiritual practices because the holy month of Shravana is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be sacred for religious observances.

Raksha Bandhan: The Bond of Protection

Raksha Bandhan, a well-known Shravana Purnima celebration, honors the brother-sister bond. According to Hindu mythology…

  • To secure her position alongside Vishnu and gain Bali’s protection, Lakshmi, the goddess, tied him a rakhi.
  • A protective bond between siblings was symbolized by Draupadi tying a Rakhi on Lord Krishna.
  • The tradition involves sisters tying a Rakhi, a sacred thread, on their brothers’ wrists as a prayer for their well-being, a gesture reciprocated by brothers’ promises of protection and support.

Upakarma: A Day for Renewal of Vedic Learning

Upakarma, or Yajurveda Upakarma, is a significant Brahmin ritual observed on Shravana Purnima. Included in this ritual are:

  • The sacred thread (Yajnopavita or Janeu) is changed, symbolizing spiritual cleansing and recommitting oneself to Vedic studies.
  • Let us offer prayers to the great sage Veda Vyasa, who compiled the Vedas.
  • The importance of education, discipline, and commitment to Dharma is reinforced through this practice.
  • Worship of Lord Shiva and Vishnu

Devotees celebrate the full moon in Shravana, a month dedicated to Lord Shiva, by:

  • The Shiva Linga is being ritually bathed in a special Rudrabhishek.
  • We offer Bilva leaves, milk, honey, and water to Lord Shiva.
  • Moreover, it’s Hayagriva Jayanti, celebrating Lord Hayagriva’s birth. He’s a Vishnu avatar and the deity of knowledge and wisdom.

  • Raksha Bandhan Celebration – Sisters tie Rakhis on their brothers’ wrists, performing aarti and exchanging gifts.
  • Upakarma Ceremony – Brahmins and Vedic scholars change their sacred threads and engage in Vedic chanting.
  • Shiva Puja – Devotees visit temples to perform Abhishekam and recite Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
  • Charity and Donations – Giving to the poor and performing Anna Daan (food donation) are common practices.
  • Om Namah Shivaya! 🙏
