Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi

Hindus observe Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi, a sacred festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom, prosperity, and the remover of obstacles. Celebrated on the fourth day of the dark half of the month of Magha (January-February), in the Hindu lunar calendar.

Devotees celebrate Lord Ganesha’s Dwijapriya (“dear to the twice-born”) aspect today. It is believed that observing Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi through fasting, prayer, and rituals leads to wisdom, overcomes obstacles, and fosters success in both academic and spiritual pursuits.

Meaning of Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi

Meaning “twice-born,” Dwijapriya refers to Brahmin scholars whose wisdom and knowledge grant them a spiritual rebirth. Devotees believe that Lord Ganesha, in his aspect as Dwijapriya, blesses the learned, bestows intelligence, and removes obstacles hindering educational and spiritual growth.

Lord Ganesha as the Patron of Knowledge

Scholars and students especially venerate Lord Ganesha in Hindu belief, as he is seen as the supreme deity of wisdom and intelligence. It is believed that worshipping him during Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi enhances academic performance for students and fosters spiritual enlightenment for devotees.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

  • Devotees observe a strict fast (Sankashti Vrat) from sunrise to moonrise, consuming only fruits, milk, and sattvic food.
  • The fast is broken after sighting the moon, offering modak, coconut, and jaggery-based sweets to Lord Ganesha.
  • 2. Special Dwijapriya Ganesha Puja

  • Worship includes offering durva grass, red flowers, turmeric, and sandalwood paste to Lord Ganesha.
  • Devotees chant Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Sankashti Stotra, and the Dwijapriya Ganesha mantra for blessings in learning and wisdom.
  • 3. Offering Arghya to the Moon

  • A crucial ritual involves offering water (Arghya) to Chandra Deva (Moon God), which is believed to eliminate negativity and enhance clarity of thought.
  • 4. Charity and Acts of Kindness

  • Performing daan (charity), such as feeding the poor, donating books, stationery, and offering food to Brahmins, is considered highly auspicious.
  • May Lord Dwijapriya Ganesha bless all with wisdom, learning, and prosperity! 🙏🐘📚
