Karva Chauth in Hindu Traditions

Karva Chauth is a Hindu festival where married women traditionally pray for their husbands’ well-being and longevity. Kartika (October-November), during the waning moon phase, on its fourth day, is when it is observed.

North India, especially Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, celebrates this festival enthusiastically. A strict sunrise-to-moonrise fast is observed by women, who pray for their husbands’ well-being and marital bliss.

The Story of Queen Veeravati

Queen Veeravati’s observance of Karva Chauth, according to legend, resulted in her fainting from hunger. Her brothers tricked her into breaking her fast prematurely, bringing bad luck to her husband. Her renewed dedication to the fast led the god of death, Lord Yama, to revive her husband, thus demonstrating Karva Chauth’s power.

Through prayer and devotion to Lord Yama, Karva, a dedicated wife, rescued her husband from a crocodile attack. A wife’s love and devotion are powerfully protective, as this story shows.

Legend says Draupadi observed Karva Chauth, praying to Lord Krishna to protect Arjuna during the Mahabharata war.
