Celebrated by Hindus, Balachandra Sankashti Chaturthi honors Lord Ganesha, venerated as the remover of obstacles and the deity of wisdom, intellect, and prosperity. Hindus observe this on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in Phalguna (February-March).

Today, Lord Ganesha is worshipped in his Balachandra form, meaning “the moon-adorned one”. This symbol embodies serenity, balance, and wisdom, urging devotees towards patience, intelligence, and resilience when facing life’s difficulties.

Meaning of Balachandra Sankashti Chaturthi

The name Balachandra, a combination of “Bala” (young) and “Chandra” (moon), describes the crescent moon adorning Lord Ganesha’s head. Divine knowledge, emotional stability, and the everlasting bond between the universe and the wisdom of Lord Ganesha are represented by the crescent moon.

Lord Ganesha’s Association with the Moon

In Hindu tales, Lord Ganesha’s curse on the moon, mocked for his appearance, makes moon-gazing on Ganesh Chaturthi unlucky. Yet, the moon subsequently sought forgiveness, and Ganesha granted it beauty and serenity, connecting it to his divine image. Balachandra Sankashti Chaturthi celebrates the symbolic union of Ganesha’s wisdom and the moon’s representation of cosmic equilibrium.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

Devotees observe a strict fast (Sankashti Vrat) from sunrise to moonrise, consuming only fruits, milk, and sattvic food.

The fast is broken after sighting the moon, offering modak, coconut, and jaggery-based sweets to Lord Ganesha.

2. Special Balachandra Ganesha Puja

Worship includes offering durva grass, red flowers, turmeric, and incense to Lord Ganesha.

Devotees chant Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Sankashti Stotra, and the Balachandra Ganesha mantra to seek divine blessings.

3. Offering Arghya to the Moon

A significant ritual involves offering water (Arghya) to Chandra Deva (Moon God), believed to remove misfortunes and bring peace and clarity of thought.
