About Maraka Calculator
Why the 2nd and 7th? Classical texts count the 3rd and 8th as the houses of longevity, and the 12th from any house marks its expenditure: the 2nd is the 12th from the 3rd, and the 7th is the 12th from the 8th. That is why the lords of the 2nd and 7th, and the planets that occupy those houses, carry the maraka role. Because Vedic houses follow whole signs, the two maraka signs and their lords are fixed for each ascendant: the reference table at the end of the report lists them for all twelve lagnas, with your own row highlighted.
Not every maraka weighs the same, and the calculator grades them in three tiers. A 2nd or 7th lord is a strong maraka unless it is your lagna lord or one of the luminaries. When the lord of the 2nd or 7th is your lagna lord, or the Sun or Moon, it is a soft maraka: the lagna lord is the protector of the chart, and the tradition this calculator follows exempts the luminaries from the full maraka role. Planets that join or aspect a strong maraka, or sit in the 2nd or 7th, are associated marakas that add to the pattern. The report sums these up as a strong, moderate or soft maraka pattern for your chart.
Timing is where the reading becomes practical. A maraka acts through its dasha periods, and a mahadasha can run for many years, so the calculator walks your full Vimshottari sequence and lists the next antardasha periods of your strong maraka with exact dates, highlighting any that is running now. Read them as care periods: good times to sleep well, keep up health check-ups, avoid needless risks and not push the body past its limits. Soft marakas carry no care periods of their own.

A maraka acts through its dasha periods. A mahadasha can last 6 to 20 years, which is too long to act on, so the calculator lists the upcoming antardasha periods of your strong maraka, which run from months to a few years, with exact dates. Any period running now is highlighted.
Is the maraka the same for everyone with the same ascendant?
The maraka houses and their lords are fixed for each ascendant, as the reference table shows. What changes from person to person is where those lords sit, which planets join or aspect them, which planets occupy the 2nd and 7th, and when their periods run. That is what this calculator works out from your birth details.
Why do soft marakas have no care periods?
A soft maraka is a 2nd or 7th lord that is also your lagna lord, the Sun or the Moon. The lagna lord protects the chart and the luminaries are exempt from the full maraka role in this tradition, so their periods are not treated as care periods. If both of your maraka lords are soft, the report says so instead of listing dates.
