Mula is the nineteenth nakshatra, opening Sagittarius. Its name means 'the root': digging to the bottom of things, uprooting what is finished, and the research instinct that will not accept surface answers. People under it tend to have a deeply inquiring mind that drives them to the root of things, with strong faith and the inner strength to meet hard reversals; born investigators, though a leave-it-to-fate streak can stall the inner change their searching calls for. Its symbol, a bunch of roots, speaks of endings that clear the ground for new growth.
Presided over by Nirriti, goddess of dissolution, with the bunch of roots as its symbol. Its Vimshottari lord is Ketu.
— Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra daśā adhyāya (Vimśottarī lords)
Span 0°00′–13°20′ Dhanu; lord Ketu in Jupiter's sign — the root-cutting philosopher. Its opening degrees follow the Jyeshtha junction, so early Mula births are checked for nakshatra gandanta; it also anchors the gandmool group the panchang flags.
