About Muhurtha Calculator
Muhurtha (also spelt Muhurat or Muhurta) is the electional branch of Vedic astrology — instead of reading a birth chart, it selects the most favourable moment to begin something important. Classical texts such as Muhurtha Chintamani and Kalaprakashika hold that an activity started under a supportive sky inherits that support, which is why Hindu families still fix weddings, housewarmings, naming ceremonies and business openings by muhurtha.
For every day in the selected window, the calculator examines the five limbs of the panchanga — tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga and karana — using the suitability lists prescribed for your chosen event. A day is declared "Muhurtha found" only when every one of these core criteria passes. On top of that, event-specific chart factors are graded, such as the ascendant type, planets occupying sensitive houses, benefics in Kendra or Trikona, and the Saka calendar month traditionally recommended for the event.
What makes this different from a generic panchang list is personalisation: Tarabala is counted from your janma nakshatra and Chandrabala from your janma rashi, so a date that suits one person may be unsuitable for another. That is why the calculator asks for your birth date, time and place — the same details astrologers use when they fix a muhurtha manually.
Each day card also lists the inauspicious windows to avoid — Rahu Kaal, Yamakanta Kaal, Durmuhurtha and Varjyam — so once you have a suitable date, you can also choose a clean hour within it. What is a muhurtha (shubh muhurat)?
A muhurtha is an astrologically chosen auspicious time to begin an important activity. Electional astrology holds that the panchanga of the starting moment — tithi, weekday, nakshatra, yoga and karana — colours the outcome of the whole undertaking, so ceremonies and ventures are traditionally started only in a favourable window.
How does this muhurtha calculator work?
You choose one of 20 events and a start date. The calculator then checks each of the next 10 days against the classical suitability rules for that event: the prescribed nakshatras, weekdays, tithis, yogas and karanas, plus event-specific chart conditions such as planets in sensitive houses or the recommended calendar months. Days where every core rule passes are highlighted as "Muhurtha found".
Why does the calculator need my birth details?
Two important factors are personal, not universal. Tarabala is counted from your birth nakshatra to the day's nakshatra, and Chandrabala measures the transit Moon's position from your birth rashi. A date that is excellent for one person can be unsuitable for another, so a personalised muhurtha is always checked against the individual's chart.

What if no muhurtha is found in the 10-day window?
That simply means no day in that window satisfied every core rule for your event — it is common, since the criteria are strict. Move the start date forward and scan the next window, or look at days where only a minor factor failed and consult an astrologer about whether it can be tolerated or remedied for your chart.
What are Rahu Kaal, Yamakanta, Durmuhurtha and Varjyam?
They are daily inauspicious spans that should be avoided even on an otherwise good day. Rahu Kaal and Yamakanta Kaal are fixed eighths of the daytime ruled by the weekday, Durmuhurtha are short weekday-specific periods, and Varjyam is a portion of each nakshatra considered unfit for new beginnings. The calculator lists all four for every day so you can pick a clean hour within your chosen date.
Is this calculator a substitute for consulting an astrologer?
It is a strong starting point — the same panchanga screening an astrologer performs first. For major once-in-a-lifetime events like marriage, a final muhurtha is traditionally fine-tuned to an exact lagna and hour for the specific place of the ceremony, so use the shortlisted dates from this tool and have an astrologer fix the precise time.
