The Significance of Purnima Shradh

Purnima Shradh (also called Purnima Pitru Tithi) is a sacred Hindu ceremony honoring and praying for deceased ancestors, known as Pitru Devtas. This is performed on a full moon day (Purnima), either during Pitru Paksha or on any other important full moon throughout the year. This significant day is dedicated to ancestral rites, offering the deceased peace and the promise of salvation (moksha).

Through devout Shradh rituals and offerings, Hindus believe they can secure blessings from their ancestors, overcome obstacles, and ensure future generations’ prosperity.

Honoring Ancestral Spirits (Pitru Tarpan)

In Hinduism, ancestors inhabit Pitru Loka and revisit the living to receive offerings during the Shradh ceremonies. The spirits of the departed are soothed and find peace when offered food, water (Tarpan), and prayers during the Purnima Shradh.

The Importance of Pind Daan and Tarpan

It’s believed that the Pind Daan ritual—offering rice balls mixed with sesame seeds and ghee—facilitates the ancestors’ journey to the afterlife. Performing Tarpan (offering water with black sesame seeds) brings peace to the departed souls and grants prosperity to the familyOffering water with black sesame seeds (Tarpan) is believed to bring peace to the departed and prosperity to the family.

Connection to Karma and Family Well-being

Hindus believe that family difficulties can stem from the unfulfilled desires of their ancestors. Performing Purnima Shradh helps clear ancestral debts (Pitru Dosha) and ensures harmony, prosperity, and success.
