Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi

Hindus celebrate Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi as a sacred festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the god of wisdom, intellect, prosperity, and the remover of obstacles. Celebrated on the fourth day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month Paush (December–January), it is known as Chaturthi.

Lord Ganesha, in his large-bellied Lambodara form, is worshipped by devotees today. This form symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s capacity to process all experiences, positive and negative, with infinite wisdom. People believe that celebrating Lambodora Sankashti Chaturthi with fasting, prayers, and rituals leads to prosperity, removes obstacles, and promotes spiritual development.

Meaning of Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi

Ganesha’s name, Lambodara, combines “Lamba” (large) and “Udara” (belly), representing his immense knowledge, ability to contain the universe, and acceptance of everything. This day is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, whose blessings are sought to overcome difficulties and gain wisdom, as “Sankashti” means “relief from hardship.”

Lord Ganesha as the Symbol of Intelligence and Acceptance

Hindus believe that Ganesha’s ample belly signifies his ability to absorb and retain a great deal of wisdom. His peaceful and accepting demeanor fosters patience, resilience, and contentment in his followers’ lives.

  • Devotees chant Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Sankashti Stotra, and the Lambodara Ganesha mantra for divine blessings.
  • 3. Offering Arghya to the Moon

  • A significant ritual involves offering water (Arghya) to Chandra Deva (Moon God), believed to remove bad luck and negative influences.
  • 4. Charity and Acts of Kindness
