Lakshmi Puja: Welcoming the Goddess of Wealth

Lakshmi Puja is the spiritual heart of Diwali. Performed on the Amavasya (new moon) of the month of Kartika — the darkest night of the year — it is the evening when Hindu households invite Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity and good fortune, to enter their homes. The countless lamps of Diwali are lit not merely for celebration but as a beacon, guiding the Goddess to homes that have been cleaned, opened and made ready for her arrival.

Significance of Lakshmi Puja

Tradition holds that Goddess Lakshmi arose from the churning of the cosmic ocean, the Samudra Manthan, and chose Lord Vishnu as her eternal consort. On the night of Diwali she is believed to walk the earth, pausing at homes that are bright, clean and welcoming, and passing by those left dark or neglected. The puja is therefore as much an act of inner preparation — clearing away disorder and lighting up one's surroundings — as it is a ritual of devotion.

Lakshmi is rarely worshipped alone. Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and giver of wisdom, is honoured beside her, so that wealth is always accompanied by discernment. Many families also place Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, and the account books or tools of their trade before the deities, seeking steady prosperity in the year ahead.

How Lakshmi Puja Is Observed

The timing of the puja is considered especially important. It is performed during Pradosh Kaal, the auspicious window just after sunset, and ideally when a fixed (sthira) sign such as Vrishabha is rising — a symbol of stability, so that the wealth invited in stays and grows. Because this window depends on the exact moment of the Amavasya tithi and the local sunset, the muhurta shifts from year to year and from place to place, which is why the precise timing matters as much as the date.

Homes are scrubbed and decorated with rangoli and fresh flowers, and the footprints of the Goddess are sometimes drawn leading from the doorway to the shrine. Doors and windows are left open, earthen diyas are lit along thresholds and balconies, and the family gathers to offer sweets, lotus flowers, coins and prayers to Lakshmi and Ganesha. The aarti that follows fills the home with light and sound — a fitting welcome to the Goddess of abundance on the year's most luminous night.

May Goddess Lakshmi bless your home with prosperity, peace and light.
