Chaitra Purnima in Hindu Traditions

Hinduism considers Chaitra Purnima, the full moon in Chaitra (March-April), to be of immense spiritual importance. The first month of the Hindu lunar calendar, Chaitra, has come to a close. Today is considered a very auspicious day for religious practices, spiritual development, and charitable deeds.

Hanuman Jayanti, Satyanarayan Puja, and sacred river bath observances are among the many Hindu traditions that mark Chaitra Purnima. This is a period dedicated to spiritual devotion, cleansing, and seeking divine grace.

Hanuman Jayanti

Chaitra Purnima’s most popular event is Hanuman Jayanti, which celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, a staunch devotee of Lord Rama. For strength, courage, and protection from negativity, devotees show their devotion through fasting, temple visits, and recitations of the Hanuman Chalisa.

Satyanarayan Puja

Lord Vishnu is honored by many Hindu families through the Satyanarayan Puja, which they celebrate on Chaitra Purnima. This puja is believed to bestow prosperity, peace, and blessings from the divine. Worshipers pray, study sacred texts, and share blessed food with family and friends.

Holy River Baths and Charity

People believe that taking a holy dip in rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Godavari on Chaitra Purnima brings good fortune. People believe this act purifies the soul by cleansing past sins. Many devotees practice charity, donating food, clothing, and necessities to the poor, believing it earns them spiritual merit.

Fasting and Devotion – Many devotees keep a vrat (fast) on this day, consuming only fruits and milk. They spend time in prayers, bhajans, and recitations of sacred texts like the Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita.

Temple Visits and Rituals – Devotees visit temples, offer prayers to Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Lakshmi, and participate in special pujas and kirtans organized in temples.

Offering of Arghya to the Moon – As Chaitra Purnima is a full moon night, devotees perform Arghya (offering of water and prayers) to the Moon, seeking mental peace, prosperity, and good health.
