Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi

Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and god of wisdom, prosperity, and success, Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi is a significant Hindu religious festival. Celebrated on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in Ashwin (September-October), a Hindu lunar month.

Devotees honor Lord Ganesha’s Vakratunda form—meaning “curved trunk”—on this day. The symbol represents divine strength, wisdom, and the power to triumph over obstacles. Devotees fast, pray, and worship the moon to gain Ganesha’s blessings for success, safety, and overcoming obstacles.

Meaning of Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi

Lord Ganesha’s distinctive elephant head is the origin of his name, Vakratunda, combining “vakra” (curved) and “tunda” (trunk). Adaptability, intelligence, and the capacity to overcome obstacles with wisdom and flexibility are represented by the curved trunk.

Lord Ganesha as the Destroyer of Evil

In Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha’s first incarnation, Vakratunda, vanquished the demon Matsarasura. This Ganesha form signifies the conquest of pride, jealousy, and negativity, urging devotion and the embrace of wisdom and humility.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

  • Devotees observe a strict fast (Sankashti Vrat) from sunrise to moonrise, consuming only fruits, milk, and sattvic food.
  • The fast is broken after sighting the moon, with offerings of modak, coconut, and jaggery-based sweets to Lord Ganesha.
  • 2. Special Vakratunda Ganesha Puja

  • Worship includes offering durva grass, red flowers, turmeric, and incense to Vakratunda Ganesha.
  • Devotees chant Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Sankashti Stotra, and the Vakratunda Ganesha mantra to invoke his blessings.
  • 3. Offering Arghya to the Moon

  • A significant ritual involves offering water (Arghya) to Chandra Deva (Moon God), which is believed to eliminate financial troubles and mental stress.
  • 4. Acts of Charity and Helping the Needy

  • Performing daan (charity), such as feeding the poor, donating food, clothes, and helping animals, brings divine blessings.
  • May Lord Vakratunda Ganesha bless everyone with prosperity, peace, and happiness! 🙏🐘
