Sharad Purnima in Hindu Traditions

Falling in the Hindu month of Ashwin (September–October), Sharad Purnima—also known as Kojagari Purnima or Raas Purnima—is an auspicious full moon night. It’s considered the year’s brightest and most spiritually potent full moon. Lord Krishna’s Raas Leela, Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings, and the magical moonlight all come together on this sacred day. Sharad Purnima is celebrated through fasting, worship, and night vigils, as devotees believe it bestows prosperity, health, and wish fulfillment.

The Divine Raas Leela of Lord Krishna

One of the most celebrated legends of Sharad Purnima is the Raas Leela of Lord Krishna. It is believed that:

That night, the moon shone down as Krishna performed the sacred Raas Leela dance with the gopis of Vrindavan. The symbol embodies the unification of the soul and the Supreme, underscoring devotion, divine love, and spiritual illumination.

Goddess Lakshmi’s Blessings – Kojagari Purnima

Goddess Lakshmi is the focus of Sharad Purnima, also called Kojagari Purnima, in many areas of India. According to the legend:

Those who stay up praying, chanting, and giving to charity receive Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings as she visits the Earth. The word “Kojagari” translates to “Who is awake?”. implying that Goddess Lakshmi bestows wealth and prosperity upon those who remain vigilant in devotion.

The Healing Nectar of the Moon

Ancient Hindu beliefs state that:

According to tradition, the moonbeams on Sharad Purnima possess medicinal and nutritive qualities. Moonlight-infused rice kheer is believed to promote good health, energy, and spiritual growth.

1. Fasting and Night Vigil

  • Many devotees observe a full-day fast and break it at night after moon worship.
  • Some stay awake all night, engaging in bhajans, meditation, and prayers to receive divine blessings.
  • 2. Offering Kheer Under the Moonlight

  • A special ritual involves preparing sweet kheer (rice pudding with milk and sugar) and placing it under the open sky.
  • It is consumed as prasad (holy offering) the next morning, believed to bring health and longevity.
  • 3. Lakshmi Puja and Charity

  • Devotees perform Lakshmi Puja, offering flowers, sweets, and prayers to seek prosperity and fortune.
  • Acts of charity (daan), including donating food, clothes, and essentials to the needy, are highly meritorious on this day.
  • May the full moon of Sharad Purnima bring prosperity and happiness to all! 🙏🌕
