Ratha Saptami in Hindu Traditions

The Hindu festival of Ratha Saptami, also called Surya Jayanti, is a significant celebration dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God. It’s observed on the seventh day (Saptami) of the bright fortnight of the Magha month (January-February). The festival celebrates the sun’s movement north, signifying the arrival of longer, brighter days, health, and wealth.

Hindus consider Ratha Saptami a sacred day to worship Surya Dev, praying for energy, wisdom, and spiritual awakening. This day is also one of cleansing and renewal, making fasting, prayer, and ritual bathing especially significant.

The Sun’s Chariot and Cosmic Energy

“Ratha” means chariot, while “Saptami” signifies the seventh day. Legend says that Surya Dev starts his heavenly journey in a golden chariot pulled by seven horses, driven by his charioteer, Aruna, on this day. The seven horses embody the seven colors of the rainbow (VIBGYOR) and the week’s days, symbolizing the continuous cycle of time and universal balance.

A son was granted to King Yashovarma, the legend goes, following his devout worship of Lord Surya on Ratha Saptami. This emphasizes the sun’s ability to bring health, strength, and success to those who worship it.

1. Holy Bath and Arghya Offering

  • Devotees take a holy bath before sunrise, ideally in sacred rivers or at home, to cleanse their sins.
  • After bathing, they offer Arghya (water) to Surya Dev, chanting Surya Mantras like “Om Hrim Sum Suryaya Namah”.
  • 2. Special Surya Puja and Rangoli

  • Homes and temples perform Surya Puja, offering red flowers, wheat, sugarcane, and jaggery to the Sun God.
  • Devotees also draw a chariot-shaped Rangoli with seven horses at their doorstep, symbolizing the Sun’s divine vehicle.
  • 3. Fasting and Chanting of Aditya Hridayam

  • Many devotees observe a day-long fast and recite the Aditya Hridayam Stotra, a powerful hymn dedicated to Surya Dev.
  • Consuming jaggery-based sweets, wheat, and rice dishes is considered auspicious.
  • 4. Charity and Donations

  • Giving food, clothes, and grains to the poor and Brahmins is believed to bring divine blessings and good karma.
  • May Surya Dev bless all with energy, success, and well-being! 🙏☀️
