The Significance of Parivartini Ekadashi in Hindu Traditions

Lord Vishnu is honored on Parivartini Ekadashi, a holy Hindu fast also called Parsva or Vamana Ekadashi. This falls during the waxing moon phase, on the eleventh day of Bhadrapada (August-September). The importance of this Ekadashi lies in its marking of Lord Vishnu’s change of sleeping position during Chaturmas, his four-month cosmic rest.

This Ekadashi is believed to bestow divine blessings, spiritual purity, and ultimately, liberation (moksha). It is believed by followers that fasting on this day expiates sins and wards off misfortune.

The Changing Posture of Lord Vishnu

During Chaturmas (the four-month period of Vishnu’s yogic sleep, or Yoga Nidra), Lord Vishnu rests on Sheshnag (the cosmic serpent) in the Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk). On Parivartini Ekadashi, he changes his sleeping position, symbolizing a cosmic transition and renewal of divine energy.

This Ekadashi is also associated with Lord Vamana (the fifth incarnation of Vishnu), who appeared to restore cosmic balance and humility by subduing King Mahabali. Worshiping Lord Vamana on this day grants prosperity, humility, and righteousness.

The legend of King Mahabali’s surrender to Lord Vamana is deeply connected to this day. It teaches that pride and ego must be surrendered to attain divine grace and true wisdom.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

  • Devotees observe a strict fast, avoiding grains, pulses, and tamasic foods.
  • Some perform nirjala vrat (waterless fast) for deeper spiritual benefits.
  • 2. Worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Vamana

  • Special pujas, abhishekam (ritual bathing of Vishnu idols), and recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama take place in temples and homes.
  • Reading the Bhagavad Gita and the story of Lord Vamana is considered highly auspicious.
  • 3. Acts of Charity and Helping the Needy

  • Donating food, clothes, and essentials to Brahmins, the poor, and temple priests is encouraged.
  • Feeding cows and offering water to animals brings positive karmic benefits.
  • This Ekadashi reminds us that true success lies in faith, righteousness, and surrender to the Supreme.

May Lord Vishnu bless everyone with wisdom, peace, and spiritual awakening! 🙏🕉️
