Navaratri in Hindu Traditions

The nine-night, ten-day Hindu festival of Navaratri is a major celebration dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine forms (Navadurga). Observed twice a year—during Vasanta Navaratri in March-April and Sharad Navaratri in September-October—this festival represents the victory of good over evil, the power of the divine feminine (Shakti), and spiritual rebirth.

Celebrated with fasting, prayers, dance, and cultural events, Navaratri culminates in Vijayadashami (Dussehra), a symbol of good conquering evil.

The Victory of Goddess Durga Over Mahishasura

Hindu mythology tells of the demon king Mahishasura, who was granted a boon making him invincible to both gods and mortals. From the combined might of all the gods, Divine Mother Durga was born to overcome him. The fierce battle culminated on the tenth day (Vijayadashami) with Goddess Durga slaying Mahishasura, symbolizing dharma’s ultimate victory.

Durga, the remover of negativity, is celebrated for the first three days. The next three days honor Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and abundance. The final three days worship Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and learning.
