Mangala Chaturthi in Hindu Traditions

Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom, prosperity, and success, and remover of obstacles, Mangala Chaturthi is a revered Hindu festival. The festival occurs on the fourth day of the waxing moon during particular Hindu lunar months, and is especially significant when it falls on a Tuesday.

Devotees place great importance on this festival, believing it ensures protection from hardship, successful ventures, and general well-being. People believe that worshipping Lord Ganesha during Mangala Chaturthi eliminates negativity and promotes positivity.

Lord Ganesha as the Vighnaharta (Remover of Obstacles)

Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, is another name for Lord Ganesha. On Mangala Chaturthi, worshippers seek blessings for success, prosperity, and the overcoming of life’s challenges, both personal and professional.

Hindus observe Tuesdays as days dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Lord Hanuman, revered deities representing strength, wisdom, and courage. Many believe that worshipping Ganesha during Mangala Chaturthi is exceptionally fortunate, leading to divine protection and wealth.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

Devotees observe a fast (vrat) on Mangala Chaturthi, consuming only fruits, milk, and sattvic food until the puja is completed.

Some keep a strict Nirjala Vrat (fast without water) to express their devotion.

2. Special Ganesha Puja and Offerings

Worship includes offering durva grass, red flowers, turmeric, coconut, and modak (Ganesha’s favorite sweet).

Devotees chant Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Sankashti Stotra, and Ganesha Sahasranama to invoke his blessings.

3. Offering Arghya to the Moon

As part of the rituals, devotees offer Arghya (water offering) to the Moon God (Chandra Deva), seeking relief from negativity and obstacles.

4. Charity and Acts of Kindness

Acts of charity, feeding the poor, and donating food, clothes, or money are considered highly meritorious on this day.
