Krishna Sankashti Chaturthi

Celebrated by Hindus, Krishna Sankashti Chaturthi is a sacred festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom, success, and prosperity, and the remover of obstacles. The Hindu lunar month of Jyeshtha (May-June) sees this fall on its fourth day, during the waning moon phase.

Today is an auspicious day to pray to Lord Ganesha for overcoming obstacles, ridding yourself of past karma, and achieving success. To achieve spiritual and material well-being, devotees practice fasting, prayer, and moon worship.

The Meaning of Krishna Sankashti Chaturthi

“Sankashti” signifies freedom from difficulties, while “Chaturthi” refers to the fourth lunar day observed in devotion to Lord Ganesha. Krishna Sankashti Chaturthi, which takes place in the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight), is a potent period for seeking divine assistance in surmounting obstacles.

Lord Ganesha as the Remover of Obstacles (Vighnaharta)

Hindus believe that worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day eliminates negativity, bestows wisdom, and leads to success in all aspects of life. Those who practice faith feel that the fast and prayers of Krishna Sankashti Chaturthi bring relief from the consequences of past actions.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

Devotees observe a strict fast (Sankashti Vrat) from sunrise to moonrise, consuming only fruits, milk, and water.

After sighting the moon, they break the fast with prasad, including modak (Ganesha’s favorite sweet), coconut, and jaggery-based offerings.

2. Special Ganesha Puja and Offerings

Devotees worship Lord Ganesha with durva grass, red flowers, incense, and sandalwood paste.

Reciting Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Sankashti Stotra, and Ganesha Sahasranama is believed to bring divine blessings.

3. Offering Arghya to the Moon

A special ritual involves offering water (Arghya) to Chandra Deva (the Moon God).

This ritual is believed to remove misfortunes, clear financial obstacles, and bring peace of mind.

4. Charity and Helping the Needy

Performing daan (charity), including feeding the poor, offering clothes, and helping animals, is considered highly meritorious on this day.
