Ganadipa Sankashti Chaturthi

Celebrated as a major Hindu holiday, Ganadipa Sankashti Chaturthi honors Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom, prosperity, success, and the remover of obstacles. Celebrated on the fourth day of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) in the Hindu month of Karthika (October-November), it is known as Chaturthi.

The “Ganadipa” form of Lord Ganesha, representing divine light, wisdom, and guidance, is worshipped by devotees today. Fasting, prayers, and rituals during Ganadipa Sankashti Chaturthi are believed to overcome difficulties, bring prosperity, and lead to spiritual enlightenment.

Meaning of Ganadipa Sankashti Chaturthi

“Ganadipa” is a combination of “Gana” (group/divine attendants) and “Dipa” (light/lamp), symbolizing Lord Ganesha’s role as a guiding light for his devotees. The name Sankashti itself means “liberation from troubles,” and this day’s observance focuses on seeking Lord Ganesha’s grace to overcome difficulties and dispel ignorance.

Lord Ganesha as the Divine Light and Problem Solver

Hindu tradition holds that Lord Ganesha’s Ganadipa form embodies knowledge, wisdom, and divine guidance. Devotees believe that this day’s prayers to Ganesha illuminate their lives, both spiritually and materially.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

  • Devotees observe a strict fast (Sankashti Vrat) from sunrise to moonrise, consuming only fruits, milk, and sattvic food.
  • The fast is broken after sighting the moon, offering modak, coconut, and jaggery-based sweets to Lord Ganesha.
  • 2. Special Ganadipa Ganesha Puja

  • Worship includes offering oil lamps (diyas), durva grass, red flowers, and incense to Lord Ganesha, symbolizing the light of knowledge and divine wisdom.
  • Devotees chant Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Sankashti Stotra, and the Ganadipa Ganesha mantra for blessings.
  • 3. Offering Arghya to the Moon

  • A significant ritual involves offering water (Arghya) to Chandra Deva (Moon God), which is believed to remove negativity and bring peace and mental clarity.
  • 4. Charity and Acts of Kindness

  • Performing daan (charity), such as donating food, clothes, and lamps to the needy, brings divine blessings.
  • May Lord Ganadipa Ganesha illuminate our lives with wisdom, prosperity, and happiness! 🙏🐘🪔
