The Significance of Buddha Purnima

Vesak, or Buddha Jayanti, also known as Buddha Purnima, is a religious festival observed by both Buddhists and Hindus. The full moon of Vaishakha (April-May) marks the triple auspicious occasion of Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death).

Buddha Purnima is important to both Buddhists and Hindus because Hindus revere Buddha as Vishnu’s ninth incarnation. This festival celebrates peace, wisdom, and spiritual awakening, guiding devotees toward truth, compassion, and nonviolence.

Lord Buddha as an Avatar of Vishnu

According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Vishnu’s incarnations on Earth serve to restore dharma and guide humanity. Gautama Buddha, Vishnu’s ninth avatar according to belief, taught the importance of peace, non-violence, and self-realization. Buddhism and Hindu spiritual philosophy were both shaped by his teachings.

He was born Prince Siddhartha Gautama, but he abandoned his royal birthright to find existential truth. Years of meditation and self-discipline culminated in his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya. Buddhism, with its focus on compassion, mindfulness, and the Eightfold Path, originated from his profound understanding.

Buddha’s teachings on dharma and self-awareness are remembered by many Hindus on Buddha Purnima, who also worship Lord Vishnu. In the Hindu faith, this festival highlights the significance of spiritual growth, self-control, and compassion.
