The Significance of Bhishma Ashtami

Celebrated in Hinduism, Bhishma Ashtami honors Bhishma Pitamaha, the venerable patriarch of the Kuru dynasty featured in the Mahabharata epic. The Magha month’s (January-February) eighth day of the waxing moon is when it happens. Bhishma Pitamaha passed away on this sacred day, having elected to relinquish his life after the Kurukshetra War, while resting on a bed of arrows (Sharapanjari).

People celebrate Bhishma Ashtami with rituals, prayers, and offerings, especially to gain blessings for their fathers and ensure their ancestors’ liberation. It’s an important day to observe Tarpan, a ritual for remembering and honoring one’s forefathers.

The Story of Bhishma Pitamaha

Bhishma, son of King Shantanu and Ganga, was a legendary warrior and statesman in Hindu epics. His father’s happiness was secured by his vow of Brahmacharya, earning him the boon of Ichha Mrityu—the power to determine his own death. Bhishma, a Kaurava warrior who fought bravely at Kurukshetra, was fatally injured by Arjuna, yet his death was delayed by his ability to choose when he would die.

He spent 58 days on a bed of arrows, patiently waiting for the sun to reach Uttarayana, a time believed to be propitious for attaining moksha. Bhishma attained divinity and passed away on Magha Shukla Ashtami.

Duty, righteousness (dharma), and devotion to truth are all embodied in Bhishma.

In the Mahabharata, Bhishma bequeathed Yudhishthira priceless teachings on dharma, good governance, and righteousness before his death; this is known as the Bhishma Neeti. Among Hindus, his recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama (1000 names of Lord Vishnu) before he died is considered sacred.
