The jagradadi avasthas describe a planet's wakefulness: awake, dreaming, or asleep — how consciously its significations operate in the life. This is the simplest of the three 'state' schemes, sorting a planet into just three bands by how alert it is to its own work. In exaltation, moolatrikona or its own sign a planet is awake (Jagrat) — present and deliberate, its results showing clearly. In a friend's or neutral sign it is dreaming (Svapna), its significations arriving in a hazier, half-formed, on-and-off way. In an enemy's sign or in fall it is asleep (Sushupti), its promises faint and easily missed, as if the planet were acting in its sleep. Where the finer age and mood schemes shade the picture, this one gives the quick verdict: is a planet truly at the wheel of its affairs, drifting through them, or barely there at all?
