The Significance of Varuthini Ekadashi

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Varuthini Ekadashi is a significant Hindu fasting day, believed to bring divine protection, cleanse past sins, and bestow spiritual prosperity. This falls in April or May, on the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha. “Varuthini,” meaning “protected” or “shielded,” suggests that observing this Ekadashi grants divine protection against misfortune and karmic suffering.

Through fasting, prayer, and self-discipline, devotees hope to receive Lord Vishnu’s blessings of happiness, spiritual growth, and liberation (moksha).

The Story of King Mandhata and Varuthini Ekadashi

As the Bhavishya Purana recounts, the mighty King Mandhata suffered a curse leading to the loss of his kingdom. Wise men counseled him to devoutly observe Varuthini Ekadashi to restore his lost fortune. The power of this Ekadashi to conquer suffering and obstacles was shown when his sincere fast lifted his curse and returned his lost wealth.

Devotees believe that observing this Ekadashi washes away sins from their past and present lives. It’s as powerful as deep penance or giving to Brahmins and the needy.

1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

  • Devotees observe a strict fast (vrat), avoiding grains, pulses, and tamasic foods.
  • Some choose nirjala vrat (fasting without water) for deeper spiritual benefits.
  • 2. Worship of Lord Vishnu and Recitation of Scriptures

  • Special pujas, bhajans, and recitations of Vishnu Sahasranama and Bhagavad Gita are performed.
  • Devotees offer tulsi leaves, fruits, and sweets to Lord Vishnu as a symbol of devotion.
  • 3. Acts of Charity and Helping the Needy

  • Donating food, clothes, and essentials to the poor is considered highly meritorious.
  • Feeding cows, birds, and Brahmins helps in attaining divine grace and prosperity.
  • This Ekadashi reminds us that true happiness and success come through faith, self-restraint, and righteousness.

May Lord Vishnu bless everyone with wisdom, peace, and spiritual awakening! 🙏🕉️
