The Significance of Utpanna Ekadashi
Utpanna Ekadashi is a very sacred Hindu holy day for fasting, honoring Lord Vishnu. This falls in the month of Margashirsha (November-December), on the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha. Because this Ekadashi marks the beginning of the Ekadashi fasting tradition, it’s considered the most sacred and important.
Followers believe that fasting, prayer, and charity on this day, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, will cleanse them of sin, bring blessings, and lead to liberation (moksha).
The Birth of Ekadashi Devi and Utpanna Ekadashi
Heaven was terrorized by the powerful demon Murasura, as recounted in th e Padma Purana, causing great distress to the Devas. While Vishnu rested on the cosmic ocean, the divine Ekadashi Devi, born from him, vanquished Murasura. According to Lord Vishnu’s blessing, observing the Ekadashi fast grants liberation from sin and ultimate freedom. The celebration of Utpanna Ekadashi commemorates the birth of Ekadashi Devi and the origin of the Ekadashi fasting tradition.
People believe that observing this Ekadashi purifies the mind, body, and soul, eliminating past sins and negative karma. People say that the spiritual merit gained from fasting on Utpanna Ekadashi equals that of elaborate yajnas or a holy dip in the Ganges.
