The Significance of Shattila Ekadashi

Hindus observe Shattila Ekadashi, a sacred fast dedicated to Lord Vishnu, for spiritual cleansing, forgiveness of past sins, and blessings of prosperity. The date is the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Magha (January-February). Sesame seeds (“Shattila”) are vital to the observance of this Ekadashi, featuring prominently in acts of charity, consumption, and religious rituals.

Believers find that fasting, charity, and offering sesame seeds on this day cleanse the soul, bring divine blessings, and promise a prosperous and fulfilling life.

The Story of Shattila Ekadashi

According to Hindu scriptures, there was a pious but miserly woman who performed severe penance but never engaged in charity. As a result, she was reborn in a lifeless form with no food despite her devotion. Lord Vishnu, moved by her past devotion, advised her to observe Shattila Ekadashi and donate sesame seeds in charity. By doing so, she was relieved of her suffering and attained divine blessings.

It is believed that donating, consuming, or using sesame seeds in rituals helps remove sins and bring prosperity.

Devotees use sesame seeds in six ways:

  • Bathing with water mixed with sesame seeds
  • Massaging the body with sesame oil
  • Offering sesame seeds in rituals
  • Consuming sesame seeds in food
  • Donating sesame seeds to the needy
  • Performing sesame-based fire sacrifices (havan)
  • 1. Observing Fasting and Devotion

  • Devotees observe a strict fast, avoiding grains, pulses, and tamasic foods.
  • Some choose nirjala vrat (fasting without water) to deepen their spiritual connection.
  • 2. Worship of Lord Vishnu and Recitation of Scriptures

  • Special Vishnu pujas, bhajans, and recitations of Vishnu Sahasranama and Bhagavad Gita take place in homes and temples.
  • Offering tulsi leaves, sesame seeds, and prasad to Lord Vishnu is considered highly auspicious.
  • 3. Acts of Charity and Helping the Needy

  • Donating food, clothes, and sesame seeds to the poor and Brahmins is considered highly meritorious.
  • Feeding cows, birds, and the needy is believed to bring divine blessings and good karma.
  • This Ekadashi reminds us that spiritual growth is achieved not only through devotion but also through selfless acts of kindness.

May Lord Vishnu bless everyone with wisdom, peace, and spiritual awakening! 🙏🕉️
