The Significance of Putrada Ekadashi in Hindu Traditions
Hindus observe Putrada Ekadashi, a sacred fast dedicated to Lord Vishnu, to seek blessings for children and family well-being. It happens biannually.
During the waxing moon phase of the month of Paush (December-January), Paush Putrada Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day. The Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh lunar day of the Shravana month (July-August).
Childless couples especially observe this Ekadashi, praying for children, while others pray for family happiness and well-being.
The Story of King Suketuman and Putrada Ekadashi
According to the Bhavishya Purana, King Suketuman and Queen Shaibya were childless and deeply distressed. They observed a strict fast on Putrada Ekadashi, following the guidance of sages. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed them with a virtuous son, ensuring the prosperity of their lineage. Since then, it is believed that fasting and worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day grants the blessing of children.
Lord Vishnu is worshiped as the protector of families and the one who grants boons for progeny. Observing this Ekadashi is believed to remove past karmic obstacles that prevent the blessings of children.
