The Significance of Mohini Ekadashi in Hindu Traditions

Mohini Ekadashi is a holy day for Hindus, marked by fasting to honor Lord Vishnu. It occurs on the eleventh day of the waxing moon in Vaishakha, the month of April-May. Named for Mohini, the mesmerizing female incarnation of Vishnu who played a key role in the churning of the ocean, this Ekadashi holds significance.

It is believed that celebrating Mohini Ekadashi leads to the removal of sins, bestows good fortune, and grants devotees spiritual liberation (moksha). On this day, those who practice their faith fast, hoping to gain divine wisdom, inner peace, and the strength to resist temptation and worldly distractions.

Mythological and Religious Significance

Gods and demons both sought the Amrut (nectar of immortality) during the churning of the ocean. With the nectar’s appearance, the Asuras’ seizure attempt triggered divine intervention. To ensure the Devas’ victory, Lord Vishnu, in his Mohini incarnation, cunningly distributed the nectar, leaving the Asuras defeated. This act signifies the victory of righteousness over dishonesty and avarice.
