The Significance of Indira Ekadashi
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Indira Ekadashi is a holy Hindu fast day; observing it is believed to bring liberation to ancestors and spiritual purity. It occurs on the eleventh day of the waning moon in the month of Ashwin (September-October).
People believe that observing a fast and performing rituals on this highly significant Ekadashi can release ancestors from their sins and grant them entry into Vaikuntha, Vishnu’s divine realm.
The Story of King Indrasena and Indira Ekadashi
The Brahmanda Purana describes King Indrasena of Mahishmati as a devout Vishnu worshipper. He learned from a wise sage that his late father was tormented in the afterlife for his past wrongdoings. Indrasena observed Indira Ekadashi, performed Vishnu puja, and gave ancestral offerings to free his father’s soul. His father’s pain ceased, and he achieved heavenly bliss, all due to Lord Vishnu’s mercy.
People believe that observing this Ekadashi washes away sins, brings peace to ancestors, and provides spiritual growth for the devotee. It’s considered incredibly auspicious to perform pinda daan and tarpan (ancestral rituals) today.
