The Significance of Raksha Bandhan

The Legend of Lord Krishna and Draupadi

The Mahabharata recounts how Draupadi bound Lord Krishna’s wounded finger with a strip of her sari. Deeply touched by her action, Krishna vowed to protect her always, a vow he upheld when she was attacked in the court of King Dhritarashtra.

According to a well-known historical narrative, Rani Karnavati of Mewar sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, pleading for his protection from invasion. The rakhi’s sacred thread inspired Humayun’s rush to protect her kingdom, showing the bond’s crucial role in duty and protection.

According to Hindu scriptures, Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra, would tie a sacred thread on his wrist before he went off to war. Goddess Lakshmi also tied a rakhi to King Bali, creating a brotherly relationship that facilitated Lord Vishnu’s return to Vaikuntha.
