Narada Jayanti - 15-June-2026

Shani Jayanti in Hindu Traditions

Observed annually, Shani Jayanti commemorates the birth of Lord Shani, who embodies justice and karma. The new moon in the Jyeshtha month (May-June), during its waning phase, is when this is observed. Known for his impact on human destiny based on past actions, Lord Shani is the son of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhaya (the shadow goddess).

People consider this day especially important for overcoming the ill effects of Saturn (Shani Dosha), reducing karmic debt, and receiving blessings for righteous conduct and achievement.

Lord Shani as the God of Karma and Justice

Shani Dev, the god of justice, discipline, and karma, holds people accountable for their actions. Among the nine Navagraha planetary deities, he influences an individual’s luck, professional life, and difficulties, reflecting past actions.

Hindu mythology portrays Shani Dev, son of Surya Dev and Chhaya, as a powerful planetary deity whose strength stems from profound meditation. It’s said that Lord Shiva himself empowered him to rule over karma and righteousness in the universe.

Vedic astrology links Saturn (Shani) to difficulties, perseverance, and eventual success. Although the Shani Sade Sati (Saturn’s 7.5-year transit) is known for its difficulties, it can also lead to significant spiritual development and increased wisdom.

1. Special Puja and Rituals

  • Devotees visit Shani temples and perform Shani Shanti Puja to seek relief from planetary afflictions.
  • Offerings such as black sesame seeds, mustard oil, and iron objects are made to please Lord Shani.
  • 2. Fasting and Charity

  • Many observe a fast (vrat) to reduce karmic debts and seek divine protection.
  • Charity is an important aspect, where devotees donate black clothes, food, and sesame seeds to the poor and needy.
  • 3. Chanting of Mantras and Reading Scriptures

  • Reciting Shani Mantras (“Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah”), Hanuman Chalisa, and reading Shani Stotra and Shani Chalisa help reduce Saturn’s negative effects.
  • 4. Lighting of Oil Lamps (Deepa Daan)

  • Lighting lamps with mustard oil under a Peepal tree and circumambulating it seven times is believed to bring relief from hardships.
  • May Lord Shani bless all with justice, protection, and prosperity! 🙏🪔
