Kurma Jayanti - 15-June-2026
Kurma Jayanti in Hindu Traditions
The birth of Lord Vishnus Kurma avatar, the tortoise, in the Satya Yuga, is commemorated by Hindus in the sacred festival of Kurma Jayanti. It’s celebrated on the full moon of Vaishakha (April-May). The second incarnation of Lord Vishnu as a divine tortoise, assisting gods and demons in the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), is celebrated on this spiritually significant day.
Observing Kurma Jayanti, devotees hope to gain stability, patience, and protection from difficulties, mirroring Lord Vishnu’s actions during the cosmic churning.
The Story of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean)
In the churning of the ocean for the elixir of immortality (Amrut), Mount Mandara, used as the churning rod, began to sink.
To help churn the ocean, Lord Vishnu transformed into a giant tortoise, Kurma, supporting the mountain on his back to ensure success. This godly act embodies the patience, persistence, and world-sustaining force of righteousness.
Known for its resilient shell and ability to overcome hardship, the tortoise, as Lord Kurma, symbolizes steadfastness and divine aid. Worshipping Vishnu’s Kurma form is thought to bestow mental serenity, stability, and the fortitude needed to face life difficulties.
