Kojagara Puja in Hindu Traditions
Celebrated as Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, Kojagara Puja is a Hindu festival dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi, who embodies wealth, prosperity, and fortune. It’s celebrated on the full moon night of Ashwin, which falls in September or October. The name Kojagara, meaning “who is awake,” highlights the tradition of devotees remaining awake throughout the night to obtain Goddess Lakshmi’s favor.
West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, and Maharashtra widely celebrate this festival, with devotees performing special Lakshmi Puja, staying up all night, and praying for prosperity.
The Divine Visit of Goddess Lakshmi
Hindus believe that Goddess Lakshmi visits Earth on this night, showering those who stay awake with wealth and prosperity. To welcome her, devotees illuminate lamps, chant bhajans, and offer prayers.
Bad fortune caused King Harsha to lose his kingdom, as a popular story tells it. His wealth and prosperity returned after he performed the Kojagara Vrat fast and paid homage to Goddess Lakshmi. This strengthens the idea that true dedication can restore lost wealth.
The harvest season is when Kojagara Puja is observed, a time for farmers to thank the goddess for a good yield. People believe the bright Sharad Purnima moon possesses spiritual power, its moonlight considered amrit (nectar) that improves health and happiness.
