Holika Dahan - 15-June-2026
The Significance of Holika Dahan
Chhoti Holi, or Holika Dahan, is a Hindu festival occurring on the Phalguna month’s full moon (February-March), one day before the Holi festival of colors. The festival commemorates the victory of good over evil, marking Lord Vishnu’s protection of Prahlada and the destruction of the demoness Holika.
Holika Dahan’s significance lies in its depiction of faith and righteousness overcoming arrogance and evil, underscoring the enduring power of devotion and truth.
The Story of Prahlada and Holika
The demon king Hiranyakashipu of Hindu mythology desired to be worshipped above Lord Vishnu. Deeply devoted to Vishnu, his son Prahlada refused to follow his father’s orders.
Because Holika had a boon protecting her from fire, the enraged Hiranyakashipu ordered her to burn Prahlada alive. But miraculously, Holika was burned to ashes, while Prahlada survived unharmed, demonstrating the ultimate victory of faith and goodness over evil.
The bonfire’s flames represent the eradication of negative energy, sin, and malevolent forces. Furthermore, it’s seen as a spiritual cleansing, fostering positivity and renewal.
